In the south, some of the most productive trophy fishing ponds and lakes achieve that status by maintaining good water
quality and by improving pond productivity through proper pond fertilization.  A fertilization program stimulates
phytoplankton growth which is the base of the food chain in your pond.  Having more food available to the fish improves
the growth rates and the maximum sizes of your fish.  

One of the first considerations before adding fertilization to your pond management program is whether your pond or
lake will require an application of agricultural limestone.  Depending on the soil type at your location, your pond may
require the application of agricultural lime to neutralize the acidity of the soil.  We use water alkalinity  as the measure
for lime requirements.  Applying agricultural lime to the pond increases the alkalinity of the water.  The minimum
recommended value for alkalinity in fertilized ponds is 20 ppm (parts per million).  Maintaining an alkalinity of more than
20 ppm allows fertilizers to react properly in order to produce a phytoplankton bloom, and also makes the water quality
more stable in terms of preventing large changes in water pH.
